Color Identification/Matching

20130805-214730.jpg

When you ask Reagan the color that a specific object is, more times than not, she will answer ‘blue’. Is blue her favorite color or have I been slacking in the color identification aspect of life? I put together a small activity for Reagan and I to play this afternoon and she absolutely loved…eating the pieces to the game. Seriously though, this was a great activity and will be super beneficial in strengthening her color identification and color matching skills.

Materials

20130805-214847.jpg

Tape
5 pieces of white paper
One crayon of each color- red, green, yellow, purple and orange
Fruity Cheerios

Directions
On each piece of paper write the name of the color crayon that you are using at the top of the paper, draw a large circle, using the same color, and fill in the circle.
Tape down the pieces of paper to a flat surface, in a arched shape, so that each color can be easily seen and reached by your child.

20130805-215429.jpg

At this point, Reagan and I did various things.
1- I pointed to each color, one by one, and told her the name of the color.
2- I then pointed to the colors again, one by one, and repeated their names. This time I asked Reagan to repeat the colors name aloud.
3- I laid each color Cheerio in front of Reagan and one by one, I told her the color name of each Cheerio.
4- I then pointed to each Cheerio, one by one, and repeated their color names. This time I asked Reagan to repeat the color names aloud.
5- I then showed Reagan how to match the Cheerio color to the circle and name color on the papers in front of her. ‘ this Cheerio is red. Can you find the red circle that matches/is the same as this red Cheerio?’ We continued this activity for several minutes.
6- I then gave Reagan multiple Cheerios of the same color and had her group them together onto the matching circles. ‘ can you place all of the yellow Cheerios onto the matching yellow circle?’ Etc.

Reagan definitely ate more Cheerios than she matched, but she was learning, having fun and eating all at the same time! Which, in my opinion, is a successful activity!
I folded back the pieces of tape and stuck them to the backs of the paper. I stacked up the papers and put them away for future use.
A super easy activity that your child will enjoy, if not the activity portion, at the very least, the Fruity Cheerios!

Have Fun!

Magnetic Letters

IMG_2955Upgrade! We purchased new magnetic fridge letters today and I couldn’t be happier! Fridge magnets keep Reagan busy for a very small portion of dinner prep time, which is better than no time! We previously sported the plastic magnetic letters on our fridge, I think that they are probably a staple in most homes, seeing how they can be purchased at the Dollar Store or in the dollar section at Target. These magnets always made me a bit nervous with their tiny circular magnetic backing. However, I still allowed them on my fridge…probably not the best idea. Whenever Reagan sat down at the fridge to play with the magnets, I would tell her that we needed to buy new ones, but of course I was usually making dinner, so the idea never sat with me for very long. It wasn’t until Reagan started to remove the magnets from the fridge, put them into her purse (an old Vera Bradley of mine that she has fallen in love with) , and carry them around the house and into the car with her that I knew it was definitely time to get rid of them. This activity, of traveling around with the magnets, threw up huge DANGER signs for me. I was afraid that with her out of sight, one of those little magnets was sure to find it’s way into her mouth. Which in all actuality, could happen just as easily with me in the same room…such a stupid mom moment. Into the garbage the plastic letters went!

On a recent trip to Marshall’s I was so glad to find these awesome Melissa and Doug Alphabet Magnets. They were an immediate hit with Reagan before they even came out of the box! The magnet backing (seen in first picture) is the exact same size as the letter and the letters are large enough that they aren’t going to be swallowed by my little one! The colors are bright and stick to the fridge magnificently! Three letter words are easily spelt with the 52 letters included in the box set. Mixing the upper and lower case letters allows for longer words that use two of the same letters, ReagAn, to be spelt.

All in all I’m super happy with the purchase and at a great Marshall’s price of $7.99! You can find the letter’s here and here as well as various other places.

Radio Flyer

20130718-134101.jpg

Reagan is absolutely loving her first Radio Flyer! Grammy brought this over the other day and Reagan has been a nonstop rider ever since. This plastic 2-in-1 bike is perfect for scooting along with your feet, when your not yet ready and able to pedal, and is simple and easy to pedal when you’re ready! The pedals easily fold when not in use. Reagan’s favorite part of this adorable bike is the spacious trunk, currently home to a rubber duck! I wasn’t able to find this bike on Radio Flyers website, but here’s a link to the bike at Walmart.

Rescue!

20130715-102323.jpg

We always knew that when we got a puppy we wanted to rescue. The process was easier said than done but in the end we got the cutest puppy, or so everyone says on the street, and are loving life as puppy parents. Being a teacher, we knew we wanted to wait until summer when I would have time to dedicate to training and being home with the little guy.

You’d think that rescuing a dog would be a simple process and that since you want to save a dog, you’d be able to find one with ease. It’s a nice thought but not exactly how it goes. In comes Petfinder.com which is basically a match.com for dogs. You can search by size, breed, gender and location and the dog’s have pictures and corresponding profiles. Here are some of the tips I discovered in the process:

1. Before filling out an application (typically 30-40 questions inquiring about yourself and lifestyle) email the shelter or rescue and ask if the dog is still available. I can’t count the number of times that I loved everything about the dog’s profile and then received a response that they had already been adopted. Inquiring before filling out the application will absolutely save you time. On the application, they will ask you for 2-3 references and typically require them to not be family members. Be sure to have that info handy and inform those who are added to the list. They will be called and quizzed on your qualifications about being a fit pet parent.

2. Don’t be afraid to look outside your immediate area. We live in NYC but the rescue where we found Hudson was in New Jersey. It was challenging to find a small breed and puppy within the city so broadening our search was helpful. Hudson was rescued from a high kill shelter in Georgia and along with his brother was dumped off at 9 weeks old. Our rescue, Poor Paws Rescue, is run by a fantastic lady named Cara and the moment I spoke to her on the phone everything felt right. Poor Paws transported Hudson and his brother, along with many other rescue dogs up to New Jersey. Many rescues will transport dogs so don’t be afraid to broaden your search to more distant locations.

3. Don’t give up! There were times when I was frustrated with the process and it seemed that for one reason or another (obnoxious landlord, availability, Andy working the NBA finals etc.) that we weren’t going to find a pup for us.

4. Be careful of high fees. Adopting from Petfinder will cost you because the fee most likely includes shots, microchip, spayed/neutered (depending on age) and transport if the animal is not in your location. However, some profiles were asking upwards of $800 and seemed more like breeders of purebreds than adoption agencies. Poor Paws’ fee was $275 which included his first round of shots, deworming and transport from Georgia. I remember being in shock when Cara told me the cost because that was by far the lowest I had seen. She simply said she wasn’t in it for the money, her fees are at cost of services and she wants to save as many dogs as she can! How great is she, right?

Petfinder isn’t just for dogs and currently has over 365,000 animals available for adoption. Check them out and save a life!

20130715-105918.jpgThis is where you will find him most of the time.  Napping in one of our laps or if both of us are on the couch, he finds a way to nuzzle in between while making sure to be touching both.

Baby Registry!

IMG_0196

I’ve procrastinated long enough…it’s time to get down to business and share my favorites from when Reagan was just a little itty bitty baby.  Several girlfriends of mine are soon to have their firsts and I couldn’t be happier for them!  All of their little families are so different and unique in their own special way…these are going to be some fabulously lucky little ones!

There are so many products out there and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to begin.  Everything ‘baby’ is still fairly fresh in my mind; Reagan’s only 19 months old, so it wasn’t really that long ago that I myself was using all of the ‘must haves’ or ‘wants’ that come along with an infant.  I’m going to be absolutely honest and say that nothing is a MUST HAVE.  Every mommy and every baby is different.  What worked for Reagan and I, may not work at all for you and your little one.  I can only speak from personal experience.

I’m sure that there are so many more things that could be added to this list and definitely things that I have forgotten.  If you have or had a favorite product; please share with my girlfriends and other readers in the comment section below.

What We Used and What We Loved!

Screen Shot 2013-06-26 at 9.50.58 PM

Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Breast Pump – I know, I know….expensive, but in my opinion, totally worth it.  I didn’t have a pump when I got home from the hospital…BIG MISTAKE!  My mom had to run out to the local BuyBuy Baby and purchase this beauty, recommended by my sister, because I was so engorged that I felt like my boobs were going to burst like water balloons.  This pump was awesome!  From start to finish, set up to clean up, this pump was easy to use.  I loved the fact that I could strap this baby on and work on my thesis at the computer, dust and vacuum the house and do various other things, all because my hands were free!  Careful not to bend too far forward, because you’ll spill the milk.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.13.15 PM

Medela Pump & Save Breast Milk Bags With Easy-Connect Adapter – Medelas Pump & Save bags were a great way to easily store my breast milk.  Some bags can be purchased with an adapter that can connect directly to the Medela Breast Pump. Pumping directly into the bag saved a lot of time and a lot of spillage from bottle to bag. The downside to these bags is that every box comes with two pump adaptors…seriously, who needs more than two adaptors.  I felt as though these bags got a bit pricey, so I saved them for situations where I would not be home to pump and needed their convenience,

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.20.32 PM

Lansinoh®  BPA Free Breastmilk Storage Bags – Lansinoh’s Storage Bags worked just as well as Medela’s, minus the pump directly to bag feature, and they were cheaper too!

Screen Shot 2013-06-26 at 10.04.20 PM
Lansinoh® Ultra Soft Nursing Pads –  I didn’t have an enormous issue with leakage…thankfully.  However, there were times that I was glad that I chose to drop in a few nursing pads.  Lansinoh’s Ultra Soft Pads were super comfortable and came individually wrapped, so it was convenient to toss a few in my purse or the diaper bag.

Screen Shot 2013-06-26 at 10.09.01 PM

Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin –  I didn’t have much of an issue with cracked nipples, raw nipples or bleeding nipples.  I did however lube up my nipples every night and every morning using Lansinoh Lanolin.  This was a preventative measure for me.  I had heard some horrific nipple stories and was scared to death of even the thought of bloody nipples.

Screen Shot 2013-06-26 at 10.15.29 PM

Born Free® Classic Bottles – When it was time for Reagan to take a bottle, she took to these Born Free Bottles right away.  Each piece is easy to clean, was comfortable for her and I to hold and were very durable.  We used both the 5 and 9 ounce bottles.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 4.14.08 PM

Philips/ Avent iQ Bottle & Food Warmer – So simple!  I have to admit that I never used this warmer for anything other than milk, but I’m sure that it would work just as wonderfully as a food warmer too! This warmer is fool-proof.  With a shot of water and the selection of a few features, your bottle is ready to be warmed! The warmer isn’t balky, so leaving it on the counter full-time, isn’t a problem.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.32.15 PM

Oxo Tot Bottle Brush with Nipple Cleaner & Stand – Tot Bottle Brush has super soft bristles that clean very well and are gentle on your bottle pieces.  The bottom of the stand collects water runoff from wet brush and is easily removed for cleaning.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.36.13 PM

Lawn Countertop Drying Rack – A great addition to your countertop!  I love this drying rack because it’s not bulky and unattractive, like most other drying racks are.  It’s not very large, but neither are the baby things that you will be drying on it.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.40.13 PM

NUK Orthodontic Pacifier  –   The NUK® advanced orthodontic nipple  mimics Mom’s nipple shape to support the natural development of jaws and teeth. It also has a soft texture shield ideal for delicate newborn skin. And, the Newborn Pacifier will help soothe and comfort your baby so you can sleep.  I chose this binkie from the NUK line because of the large breathing holes down both sides of the binkie.  Reagan took to these binkies right away, some infants go through several brands of binkies until the right one is found.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.48.16 PMScreen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.48.32 PM

Sleep Sheep & Sleep Sheep On-the-Go  – Oh white noise…you were my hero! I LOVED these sheep and still use them to this day.  The sounds of ocean waves, spring showers, and harmonious whale songs create a tranquil environment ideal for helping children of all ages to fall asleep.  The larger Sheep stays in Reagan’s crib, while the smaller Sheep travels with us when we go somewhere Reagan will be taking a nap or spending the night.

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 3.57.27 PM

Fisher-Price® Precious Planet Whale of a Tub™ Newborn to Toddler Bath Tub – I liked this whale bath, but found it to be very slippery once Reagan moved to the opposite side from where the angled back slip mat was located.  The tub was able to be used at different stages; lying back with support and then sitting unsupported.  The downside to this tub, besides the slippery plastic, was figuring out where to store it while it wasn’t in use.  We have one very small bathroom and minimal storage.   This is why I loved and also used the Summer Infant Large Comfort Baby Bather .

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 4.00.51 PM

Summer Infant Large Comfort Baby Bather – My sister-in-law loaned us this bather, which came in handy when the whale bath just became too much of a pain to store.  I found this seat easier to use and kept Reagan more secure ( no plastic to slip on).

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 11.02.31 AM

Miracle Blanket – These super soft blankets were so simple and easy to use.  My mother could swaddle Reagan in any blanket and she stayed tight and cozy.  The husband and I, on the other hand, needed the easy guidance of the Miracle Blanket.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 11.29.05 AM

Boppy Feeding & Support Pillow and Slipcover – The boppy was definitely a fabulous pillow that was supportive for me and Reagan during the infant stages of breast-feeding.  These super soft and plush Pottery Barn Slipcovers are AMAZING!

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 11.38.16 AM

Savannah Fitted Crib Sheet – We purchased three Pottery Barn fitted crib sheets for Reagan’s bed. They wash really well and are still as vibrant as the day they were bought.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 11.41.26 AM

Breathable Baby Liner – Instead of a thick cotton bumper, we opted for the breathable version.  I felt at ease with Reagan alone in her crib with this liner.  If she happened to roll into the side rails, this bumper allowed for her to breath through the mesh liner. The pink color of the liner matched the fitted crib sheets perfectly.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 2.33.31 PM

Kidsline Mod Pod Pop Jungle Bassinet – Reagan slept fabulously in this adorable bassinet.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 2.37.23 PM

Chicco Lullaby LX Playard – We use our Playard often; whether it’s weekends at the cottage or sleep-overs at grumpy and grandmas.  This playard came with all of the bells and whistles…which we totally NEVER use.  We use the actual playard (the sleeping part) and that’s it.  This yard is easy to put up, to take down, it’s not super heavy and folds into a travable size.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 2.55.25 PM

Visco Contour Changing Pad – We used two of these changing pads.  We had one in Reagan’s room on her changing table and one downstairs on the dining room table.  This 3-sided changing pad has viscoelastic memory foam in the center for extra comfort for your baby and 4″ high firm non-allergenic polyurethane foam on three sides for extra safety.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 3.03.37 PM

Changing Pad Cover by Boppy – These changing pad covers are the same material as the Boppy Pillow cover that we used. Super soft and easy to clean.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 3.10.36 PM

Boppy Waterproof Changing Pad Liners – These liners were life savers when Reagan had accidents while I was changing her diaper. They are machine washable, but make sure to line dry!

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 3.13.42 PM

SKIP*HOP Funky Farmyard Activity Mat – Reagan had a blast on this activity mat!  There is a lot happening with this mat, but it’s not overwhelming.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 8.44.27 PM

My Little Sungabunny Bouncer by Fisher Price – This bouncer came in handy when I needed to make dinner, unload the dish washer or do the laundry.   The material is super soft, the seat vibrates and plays soothing music.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 8.52.08 PM

My Little Sungabunny Cradle ‘n Swing by Fisher Price– Reagan didn’t spend a lot of time in this swing, but occasionally I would put her in when she needed the continual rocking movement and I needed a break. The material is fabulously soft!

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 8.56.27 PM

Graco Blossom LX 4-in-1 High Chair Seating System – I am absolutely in LOVE with this High Chair! It transforms seamlessly from a functional high chair to an infant feeding booster, a toddler booster, and finally a youth chair.  There are so many things that this chair can do! Clean-up is super easy too!

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.01.34 PM

LeSportsac Ryan Diaper Bag – This diaper bag is so fun! I loved the functionality of this bag, and with the entire thing being water proof, clean-up was always a breeze!

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.03.29 PM

Braun ThermoScan Electric Ear Thermometer – I found this thermometer to be very quick and easy to use.  Temperature is measured in the ear in just one second  You need to buy plastic refills for the part that is inserted into the ear.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.07.48 PM

Crane Adorable Cow Ultrasonic Humidifier – This cow got me at adorable…but that’s about all the good that it did.  I found this humidifier to be very difficult to clean and very messy when the lid was taken off and put back on.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.12.42 PM

First Aid Kit – We have three first aid kits. One upstairs, one downstairs and a small one in Reagan’s diaper bag.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.21.33 PM

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 Infant Car Seat – This car seat worked really well for us.  I didn’t find it to be too heavy and it was easy enough to get in and out of my Honda Civic.  Reagan was comfortable in this seat, but her cousin henry, whom we borrowed the seat from, absolutely hated it.  My sister believes that he was unhappy because the head visors are somewhat large and blocked his peripheral vision.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.27.15 PM

Baby Trend Single Snap-N-Go Stroller –  This was a great stroller to keep in the trunk of the car for quick shopping trips.  I was able to easily lift this stroller, weighing only 14lbs., in and out of the trunk.  This is NOT a stroller that you want to walk around the block with.  The shocks are nonexistent and the handling isn’t the greatest.

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 9.34.28 PM

Maclaren-Quest – I love my Maclaren- Quest stroller.  This umbrella stroller is light weight and handles very well.

Have fun registering! I hope this helps!
