Marshmallows & Sparkles

Marshmallows and sparkle shoes equals a fantastic start to the day for this little one! Another gloomy Rochester morning had Reagan and I packed up and headed for the museum. The Strong National Museum of Play is a fantastic place for all ages and it’s even more fantastic during the week when the chance of running into a crowd of people is slim-to-none. We have our ‘normal’ museum routine…attempt to get there when it opens at 10am, eat our packed lunch at 11:45 and be out the door by 12:30 and pray that there is NO sleeping in the car! The boys couldn’t join us on our last-minute adventure, total bummer :(

I made the mistake of grabbing socks while holding Reagan and of course she saw these Weitzman’s, that I got for a steal at Marshalls, hidden in her sock drawer because they are two sizes too big. She insisted on wearing them around the house before we left; she is definitely her aunts niece. I snuck her sneaks on while she was busy chowing down on a marshmallow, with her eyes glued to Sesame Street.

The fish are a favorite…’oooo, mommy-Nemo!’

I have to say that I was über confused by the toilet seat coverings in the bathroom- I’m 5’2 and I couldn’t reach and successfully pull off a cover without ripping it in half. A tall man or woman must have installed this contraption or, as my husband suggested, they probably didn’t want to drill through the tile. I’m assuming that the latter of the two is probably correct. But man is it hard to pop a squat while trying to contain an 18 month old…my thighs were burning… I need to start exercising.

Another awesome trip to the museum, even if it was sans toilet seat covering.

Outfit:

The striped onesie, similar , is from Gap and is fantastic because it’s super thin and extra soft!

The jeans are also from Gap. This pair is similar, just in a darker wash.

The sweater is from the Ralph Lauren Outlet. White is such a dangerous color at this age, but I love a comfy white cardigan and the pastel purple horse doesn’t hurt either! Here is a similar one.

The amazing ballet flats are Stuart Weitzman. I found these for a steal at Marshall’s. Here’s a size 7 on ebay.

St. Patrick’s Day Treat… a few months late!

IMG_1946

I made these  are a few months back to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at a shindig that a friend was hosting.  Even though I missed the boat on posting them for the holiday, these bite size treats could be made year round for a variety of festivities using the other M & M colors.  Many of the pins I saw on Pinterest showed these snacks with an icing stem to make them look more like shamrocks.  In the end I chose not to using the icing because it didn’t harden and would make transport difficult.

What you’ll need:

  • Pretzels
  • M&M’s
  • Hershey Kisses
  • Parchment Paper
  • Writing Icing (optional)

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

IMG_1941If you are looking for one specific color to work with, you have to dig through the bag first.

IMG_1943Lay out your pretzels on parchment paper.  We still do not have cooking gas, almost 9 MONTHS later, so I am still working with what I have and using my toaster oven for all cooking endeavors.

IMG_1944Place a Hershey Kiss in the center of each pretzel.  Bake at 200 for about 7 minutes.  You want the chocolate to be soft so you can easily put the M&M’s in place but you don’t want it to be melted.  As all ovens are different, keep an eye on your first batch.

IMG_1948After they cooled, I put them on a tray in the fridge to harden until I was ready to pack them up for the party.  I also used the mint M&M’s as another flavor option.

Chicken & Rice

IMG_8299

I randomly buy mushrooms to incorporate into dinner recipes.  I’m not a fan of the fungus, but my husband is.  I purchased a package of sliced baby bella mushrooms at the grocery the other day, with no set plan in mind on how I was going to use them.  I had half a bunch of asparagus that were on their last day of holding on to whatever life was left in them, a small yellow onion that needed to be used, along with an orange pepper (pepper was an after thought).  I figured I would cook some chicken in the crock pot, while Reagan and I went to the park and then saute the onion, mushroom and orange pepper, bake the asparagus and cook the rice when we got home.  Sounds good, right?

Something is quirky with my crock pot…Reagan and I were gone for less than an hour and when we got home, the chicken, which was cooking on low, was over cooked.  So on to another plan.  I chopped the chicken into small pieces and put together a stirfryish dish using some soy sauce.  I wasn’t convinced that the basil dressing that I cooked the chicken in would be the best match with the soy sauce, but I gave it a try anyway.  Overall a quick and easy meal…that Reagan wouldn’t touch (NOT A SURPRISE), but that Ryan and I enjoyed.

The amount of ingredients included below were enough to feed Ryan and I with no leftovers.  The pictures could have been better, but we were flying by the seat of our pants. Not everything that was incorporated in the dish  is included in the pictures.

Ingredients:

2 chicken breasts

basil vinaigrette dressing

1 bell pepper

1 small yellow onion

1/3 of an 8 oz package of baby bella mushrooms

1/2 a bunch of asparagus spears

4 servings of instant rice

salt

pepper

olive oil

soy sauce

Directions:

IMG_8290

Cover bottom of crock pot with dressing.  Add in chicken, top with dressing and cover.  Cook time depends on your crockpot.  My chicken was over cooked within an hour.

IMG_8295Begin to prepare your asparagus by turning your oven to 375 degrees.  Snap the ends off of the asparagus and place on a baking sheet.  Lightly cover asparagus with olive oil (roll around so completely covered) and sprinkle with salt.  The asparagus will bake in the oven for 10 minutes.  I don’t like my asparagus crispy, if you do, I would suggest additional cooking time.

Cut mushrooms lengthwise and then in half. Chop onion and thinly slice pepper.  The pepper was an afterthought, so it isn’t included until the final picture.  Heat olive oil in pan until hot.  Add in mushrooms, onion and pepper. Cook, while continuously stirring for approximately 10 minutes or until desired tenderness is reached.

At this point, I would begin the Instant Rice by following the directions on the box.

IMG_8298

Cut chicken into bite sized pieces and add into pan.  Add 1/3 cup, or more, of soy sauce to your chicken and veggie mixture.  I just continually added more and more soy sauce until I had the desired amount. Add pepper and cook for an additional 5 minutes while occasionally stirring.

Place a large spoonful of rice on a plate and top with chicken mixture.  Serve with a side of asparagus.

Camo pants have become a new staple and I find that they go with more than you would think.  I passed a pair at Gap in March that I was considering purchasing but still wasn’t sure if I would wear them often enough.  It wasn’t until I saw that they were sold out online that I realized I would be disappointed if I didn’t go buy them (this has happened more than once before).  Luckily, when in NYC, you can walk to the closest Gap in no time and when they are sold out there, they can call the store ten blocks away and within an hour you can have them in your hands!  I have worn mine with pink flats, sneakers, striped t-shirts and graphic tees…the possibilities seem endless. Since the Gap ones have sold out, I found a mix of high and lows and different fits.  How would you wear them?

Chilly May Library Attire

I love shopping for Reagan!  Not only are the clothes in her size super cute, but she will pretty much wear anything that I put on her.

Monday’s are library days for Reagan and her cousins.  Comfy clothes are in order, since there is a lot of quiet sitting and not a whole lot of movement…who am I kidding…she is all over every inch of the kids section of the library.  She sits and listens during story time, sings songs, reads books, plays with blocks and puzzles, colors, plays on the computer, climbs stairs to gaze at the beautiful doll house, puts on puppet shows and drenches herself every single time that she attempts to drink out of the water fountain.

It was rather chilly this morning here in Rochester, 46 degrees…perfect jeans weather!

I

I love this zipper sweat shirt jacket from Gap Kids.  Its super soft and buttons as well as zips.  This double closure is fantastic for Reagan, because she is becoming a pro at unzipping and taking things off, but hasn’t yet figured out buttons.  If she gets the zipper down, I know the jacket will stay on. Unfortunately, I can’t locate the jacket online.  It was purchased in NYC, off of the sales rack, about a month ago.

Reagan’s adorable raspberry colored crocheted hat was purchased at Old Navy back in February. Check out these adorable crocheted hats

Reagan rocks Chucks, just like her daddy! I love this aqua color!

The ‘tu tu cute’ long sleeved  gray shirt is from Old Navy- similar graphic t’s.  These cotton shirts are my go to for Reagan.  The cotton is super soft and cleans fabulously!  The only problem that we have with these shirts, is that I find them to be short in the torso, so I always buy a size up.

These Old Nay colored jeans are a huge hit with Reagan.  Reagan owns  4 different pairs of these jeans.  She’s very proud of herself when she searches through her pants drawer and finds the color that she’s looking for!  These jeans do stretch out, however, it takes several hours for them to do so.

Socks!! It took forever to find the perfect socks for Reagan.  Her feet were growing, but she still needed tread on the bottoms of her socks- We have wood flooring and tile throughout our home, with the exception of Reagan’s room. – These reindeer socks are from Janie and Jack.  Here are the same socks but with kite’s on them- Reagan has these too!

Perfect library outfit for a chilly Rochester day!
